中國的家長很重視子女的教育，普遍希望孩子能讀大學，而這是台灣社會也不陌生的現象。澳大利亞人類學家任柯安將這種大眾對教育一致的期望稱為「教育欲望」。

在本書中，任柯安把長期在中國山東鄒平觀察到的這種教育欲望，與「文化」、「治理」及「具地體現」的概念相結合，從地方脈絡、國家政策、歷史傳統、普遍性等層面，探索教育欲望的形成與實踐，析論什麼樣的因素促使它成為整體性的社會現象，並影響到家庭開支和國民經濟的優先順序、出生率、種族關係、治理模式、社會與政治階序等。
